How to Keep a Healthy Respiratory System

The respiratory system plays a very important part in the daily functioning of your body, so it is important to keep this system healthy. One way to ensure the health of your entire respiratory system is not to smoke. Smoking constricts the bronchioles, and the chemicals in cigarettes initially irritate the lining of the tubes and destroy the cilia. This type of damage can decrease airflow and make it harder to breathe. Long-term exposure to the chemicals in cigarette smoke destroys the walls of the alveoli and can lead to respiratory failure due to emphysema.

Another good way to keep your lungs healthy is to do aerobic exercise.  The more you exercise, the more air you need, making your lungs work harder, which keeps them big and strong.
